CHIPINGE-The Chipinge Chamber of Micro, Small to Medium Enterprises pineapple cluster is set to hold a pineapple farming, market linkage and value addition indaba on June 28, 2023.
The indaba will be held at a local lodge and is expected to link the farmers with local, regional and international markets.
Cluster chairperson Isee Zihwi confirmed the development in an interview with Chipinge Times. He said they are expecting at least 50 farmers to attend.
Zihwi said the indaba will be held under the theme; Promoting pineapple value addition chain and beneficiation through linkages, value addition and organic farming.
Currently the cluster is supplying its produce to cities as Harare, Bulawayo and Gweru.
Zihwi said the cluster has the capacity to supply more pineapples with an average harvest of over 1 500 tonnes annually and realising an average revenue of US$1, 5 million.
“The workshop will focus on issues including managing post harvest losses, finding ways of reducing transport costs, creating a formal database for pineapple farmers and those in pineapple value chain and lobbying for affordable irrigation equipment through negotiations with private suppliers and creation of group credit facility and sharing best methods of pineapple farming,” said Zihwi.
He added that there will be guest speakers from Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ), Zimtrade, Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development and Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
