GOKWE-Pope Francis has appointed Father Eusebius Jealous Nyathi as the new Bishop for Gokwe Diocese.
Gweru Diocese Bishop Rudolf Nyandoro confirmed the development in an interview with The Mirror.
“I can confirm that Pope Francis has appointed Fr. Eusebius Jealous Nyathi, the Rector of Chishawasha National Major Seminary as the new Bishop for Gokwe Diocese,” he said.
Gokwe Diocese has been vacant since September 2020, after Bishop Nyandoro transferred to Gweru Diocese, replacing the late Bishop Exevia Munyongani, who died in 2017.
Bishop will be ordained on September 17, 2023, to head the diocese with over 83 000 congregants.
The Bishop-elect said he is humbled and honoured by the appointment.
“I am humbled and honoured by this appointment. I am committed to serving the people of Gokwe and I will work very hard to build a compassionate society,” he said.
Fr Nyathi was born in Hwange in 1974 and was ordained as a Priest for Hwange Diocese in June 2004 after completing his studies in philosophy and theology from Chishawasha National Seminary in Harare Archdiocese.
He held several positions in Hwange Diocese, including Parish Priest, Vicar General and Chancellor.
Fr Nyathi was appointed Rector of the National Major Seminary in 2022. He holds a diploma in Canon Law from Pontifical Urban University in Rome and studied Pastoral Theology at the University of South Africa.
