CHIPINGE – A newly born baby boy, the child of a housemaid in Chipinge is luck to be alive after he was rescued from a blair toilet where the mother had dumped him.
Florence Magwenzi (20) of Gumira Village, Chief Musikavanhu appeared before Chipinge Magistrate Alfred Chinembiri last week for baby dumping.
Magwenzi is employed as a maid at Pindeni homestead in the same village. Magistrate Chinembiri found her guilty of exposing an infant as defined in section 108(1) of the criminal law codification and reform Act chapter 9:23.
Prosecutor Chipo Matanga said Magwenzi was eight months pregnant in March 16 and she did not inform her employer about her pregnancy.
On April 16, Magwenzi had labour pains and the same day she delivered the baby. Her employer’s daughter Siphelani Pindeni heard a baby crying from the toilet and informed her grandmother Mlambo who rushed to the scene.
Mlambo interrogated Magwenzi who professed ignorance on the matter. Magwenzi confessed after Mlambo threatened to report the matter to Police.
Magistrate Chinembiri slapped her with eight months imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on condition that she does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.https://chipingetimes.co.zw
