Suspended Gweru town clerk resigns

GWERU-Suspended acting Gweru City Council Town Clerk Vakayi Chikwekwe has resigned, Mayor Hamutendi Kombayi has confirmed.
Kombayi said Chikwekwe resigned yesterday.
“Yes, I can confirm that Chikwekwe resigned from the City of Gweru yesterday,” he said.
Efforts to get a comment from Chikwekwe were futile.
Chikwekwe was suspended in March 2023 for alleged criminal abuse of office after he awarded tenders to Casas, Wackdrive and Sheasham to service Mkoba 21 stands without approval from the procurement board.
He was arrested by Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) and was released on ZW$ 100 000 bail.
Livingstone Churu is the acting Town Clerk.
Chikwekwe is in a vehicle fight with the council after he took home a council-issued Nissan Navara, which he allegedly refused to give to the local authority.
