MUTARE – Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS), Commissioner General (CG) Moses Chihobvu has donated wheel chairs to two kids living with disabilities at Mutare Farm Prison.
The donations to Divine Mufudza (6) and Tarline Munemero (7) were done through the CG Goodwill Trust Fund run by the Correctional Services.
The wheel chairs are worth ZWL$642 000 and the handover was done at Mutare Farm Prison last week.
Chihobvu said the donation follows an appeal made to him which he in turn forwarded to the Goodwill Trust Fund Board.
“People living with disabilities face a myriad of challenges among them segregation, discrimination and isolation,” said Chihobvu.
Since inception in 2011, the CG Trust Fund has provided educational assistance to orphaned children of members of the service. It has also overseen the employment of orphans mostly those from child headed families.
The Fund has benefited 357 orphans through fees and tuition payments.
Speaking at the same occasion, Officer Commanding ZPCS Manicaland Province, Commissioner Spetosomusa Chinobva praised the work of the Fund especially during the Cyclone Idai disaster.
“The Fund has brought priceless assistance to Manicaland Province. It contributed financially to the construction of Mutare Farm Primary School. Not only those within the spheres of ZPCS have benefited but also disaster stricken communities as evidenced by its donation towards the victims of Cyclone Idai,” she said.
A beneficiary of the Trust Fund, Marceline Mahuku widow to a former prison officer applauded ZPCS for reaching out to its members during the times of need.
Golf tournaments have become the major fundraising activity for the trust fund with three tournaments having been held this year in Masvingo, Midlands and Harare Provinces.
